Vitamin therapy has proven to be an important part of treatment for patients with macular degeneration.  This has shown to slow the progression of macular degeneration both in the dry form of the disease as well as reducing the frequency of the disease converting to bleeding associated with wet macular degeneration.  The history of vitamin therapy for degenerative changes in the retina started in 1992 when the National Eye Institute of the National Institute of Health began a multicenter, carefully controlled randomized trial (AREDS trial) to help determine if antioxidant vitamins and minerals in high doses were helpful in slowing the progression of macular degeneration.  This study ended in 2001 and showed a clear ability of the supplements to reduce the risk of developing more advanced AMD (age-related macular degeneration).  To further improve therapy, a follow-up randomized trial, known as the AREDS 2 study, was performed nationwide which looked to modify and improve the original AREDS formula.  This study started in 2006 and was completed in 2013.  Listed below are the current supplements that are recommended as part of the AREDS 2 formulation. Due to the elimination of certain components, both smokers and non-smokers now use the same formula.  An unexpected finding of the study was that fish oil, which was originally thought to be helpful, was proven to not have a beneficial impact on macular degeneration.  The current AREDS 2 formulation is as follows:

  • Vitamin C…500 mg
  • Vitamin E…400 IU
  • Zinc oxide…25 mg
  • Copper oxide…2 mg
  • Lutein…10 mg
  • Zeaxanthin…2 mg

As a service to our patients, we are able to sell an AREDS 2 vitamin at our office, known as Retinavites-II which contain the full AREDS 2 formula.  As a generic medication, the price of this is very favorable and is available in either a three month supply or one year supply for additional cost savings. There are commercially available AREDS 2 formulas that can be purchased over the internet, in pharmacies, or retail stores nationwide.  If you choose to use one of these products, it is important to make certain that they have the AREDS 2 formula that matches the supplement dosages that are listed above.  As with many brand-name medications, if you choose to purchase these vitamins retail, the price of these brand name medications obviously vary greatly in various retail outlets.  Please feel free to discuss with your doctor or our staff if you have any questions regarding use of vitamin supplements for your macular degeneration. .
